The Speed of Sight mission all started many years with Mike Newman, our founder, who has always had an affiliation with charity work. In fact, his career began in a racing car driving for charity purposes! Known as our very own ‘Super Human’, Mike Newman was born completely blind! With a lifelong admiration for cars and a racing heritage, it was his lifelong ambition to become a professional racing driver. As it stands, Mike has racked up a number of unrivalled achievements and is known as the fastest blind man on land and water in the world! Read on as we go over some of his achievements in greater detail…
(2001) Motorbike Speed Record of 89 MPH: At the very start of his career, Mike Newman decided to tackle the Land Speed World Record on a motorbike. He succeeded and managed to reach an impressive speed of 89 MPH on an Aprilia bike back in 2001.
(2011) World Blind Aerial Aerobatic World Record: You won’t find a blind commercial pilot taking you on your holidays, but that didn’t stop Mike Newman from taking on the World Blind Aerial Aerobatic World Record in 2011. Carried out as part of a team with The Blades Aerobatic Team, this world record is currently held by Mike for completing the most number of consecutive loops in formation.
(2013) Water Speed Record of 93.58 MPH: As the fastest blind man on land and water, it’s only right that we talk about Mike Newman’s Water Speed Record. Completed in a Silverline Racing Boat, Mike managed to set the very first blind water speed record back in 2013 by reaching an average speed of 93 MPH.
(2014) Land Speed Record of 200 MPH: Mike Newman has taken on the Land Speed Record a number of times throughout his career. The first time was in 2003 when he set the record at 144 MPH in a Supercharged XJR Jaguar at Elvington Airfield. This was actually a charity event to raise money for Guide Dogs for the blind. Mike then went on to break his own world record in 2005 by driving a BMW M5 at 176 MPH as a part of the Channel 5 TV show Fifth Gear. After this achievement was taken from him, Mike set out to reclaim his title in 2013 and successfully set the new blind world record at 186 MPH in Porsche GT2. Last tackled in 2014, Mike once again beat his own record and currently holds the fastest car Land Speed Record of 200 MPH, which he carried out in a Nissan GTR.
(2017) Truck Land Speed Record of 102 MPH: After mastering cars, Mike Newman then turned his attention to trucks! In 2017, he successfully managed to earn the blind Land Speed Record in a 5.5 tonne racing truck by reaching an impressive speed of 102 MPH.
Mike Newman knew that a disability should never stop a person from achieving their goals, and it is this belief that allowed him to become a 9x world record holder and fulfil his lifelong goal of professional racing. Speed of Sight was created in order to allow the blind and disabled to feel the wind in their hair as they race around a race track as Mike Newman wanted to share what he has been able to achieve so far with the rest of the world. It’s anybody’s guess what challenge ‘Super Human’ Mike Newman will tackle next!
