Speed of Sight has been realising our mission of providing life changing driving experiences for the blind for nearly a decade, and our hard work had paid off time and time again! Now we are jumping with excitement to announce that Speed of Sight has been granted exclusive access to the Mecca of Motorsports here in the UK, Silverstone Circuit, for our 2021 grand finale track event!
Silverstone Circuit is the official home of British Motor Racing and is the most famous motorsports track in the entire UK! Silverstone can be found next to the village of the same name in Northamptonshire, north of London. Silverstone is also the official site of the British Grand Prix, which it has been since it first hosted the event in 1948! Silverstone has a huge circuit with a few different route options and several smaller circuits either nearby or contained within the boundaries of the main circuit itself.
Silverstone began its life as a Royal Airforce bomber station, named RAF Silverstone. The Airforce base was active during World War II, between 1943 and 1946. Once the war was ended, the then-abandoned airfield was broken into by a group of friends from the local village to use for motor racing. The twelve friends used the airfield runways to race each other over a 2-mile circuit. During their joyrides on the airfield, one member of the group accidentally hit and killed a sheep, writing off his car in the process. This led to the informal race being dubbed the Mutton Grand Prix.
The following year the airfield was leased by the Royal Automobile Club for use as an official racing circuit. Since this historic occasion the track has undergone countless changes and alterations, starting in 1949 with the swap from the triangular airfield runways to a perimeter track. The track has since been host to world-famous British racing legends like Lewis Hamilton.
Now, Silverstone circuit has granted permission to Speed of Sight to host our 2021 grand finale at the historic site! The event will be held on Thursday 7th of October, 9am to 5pm! We will be hosting our last event of the season with our life-changing driving experiences for the blind, visually impaired, or disabled people, giving them the chance to race around the world-famous circuit. We will also be holding our blindfolded driving experiences for fully sighted people to be able to understand the impact the loss of sight has while also helping to fund this incredible event.
