Here at Speed of Sight, our mission is based on giving the gift of driving to those who may never be able to hold a licence of their own due to physical or mental disabilities. Through the generosity of our donors, sponsors and fundraisers, we are able to subsidise part of the cost of our driving experiences in order to ensure that everybody is able to feel the wind in their hair. Driving with a visual impairment can be scary and requires a lot of bravery, and this is something that our founder, Mike Newman, tackled head on. We also offer driving experiences for fully abled people so that you can put yourself in the shoes of some of our racers, however there’s a slight twist – you’ll be blindfolded! Read on to find out everything there is to know…
A large part of the Speed of Sight mission is raising and promoting awareness about disabilities which is why we have created a unique and fun experience for all of our able-bodied supporters who wanted to get a taste of the excitement. Driving blind is something that many will have never considered because people with a sight impairment simply aren’t allowed to drive legally, but our adapted buggies equipped with dual controls and twin steering wheels allow us to provide the impossible.
Our driving experience for those without a disability is exactly the same as the experience we offer for those with a disability, however we’ll be using a blindfold to take away your sight. By completely taking away one of the senses, this Speed of Sight experience hopes to open up all of our eyes to what life may be like without what is said to be one of the most important senses in the human body. Believe it or not, your other senses will soon adapt and become a lot more noticeable.
The only difference is that this experience is offered at the full price of £159 and not the subsidised cost that we offer to our disabled drivers. After all, equity is the quality of being impartial and we offer these reduced costs because we know that most of our disabled racers may never be able to drive on real roads. As an able-bodied driver, you’re investing in a thrilling adventure that should fill you with excitement and just a little bit of dread in order to put yourself in the shoes of our disabled racers, however we don’t want you to walk a mile, we want you to drive a mile!
It is often said that taking away sight allows all the other senses to become heightened. Sitting in one of our adapted buggies completely blindfolded, you’ll soon release that the roar of the engine and the smell of the race track becomes a lot more intense. Here at Speed of Sight, we believe that every abled driver should consider taking part in a blindfolded racing experience as it’s the only way to truly understand what some of our racers go through.
